The Day of the Dead is without a doubt one of the worst events in the history of our town. As I sit here writing this down, my hands still tremble with the memory of the fear i felt on the night the life of every inhabitant of Black City changed forever, the night that set in motion the events that led to the founding of our current colony.
I was only a child back then, but that night will remain etched on my memory until the day I die.
It started out as a normal day; the villagers went to work, while my friends and I helped out, earning us a few coppers in the process in order to buy treats.
I just happened to be passing by the graveyard on an errand for the baker when the sky suddenly darkened and i felt a chill pass through my body.
suprised, i looked around me to see what was going on. At first i Thought it had just been a gust of wind and a cloud passing over the sun. Until I looked at the graveyard.
What i saw then was the scariest thing i had ever seen in my entire life; in the graveyard, the soil around the graves was moving, and before my eyes, the first of a number of living corpses was climbing out of its grave.
Petrified with fear, i watched as it made its way to the entrance of the graveyard in slow, shuffling steps while behind it, other bodies began climbing out of their graves in various stages of decomposition. Some were still recognizable as human beings, others looked like nothing a human would ever even want to imagine. Some were little more than walking skeletons, completely stripped of the flesh that had once covered their bones.
As i stood there, the first of the bodies reached the gate, and and kept on walking, pushing in vain against the fence. I could see however that the gate would not hold out long; it was never meant to keep anything in, let alone a tide of living corpses.
The graveyard was at the very edge of the town, and I appeared to be the only who had seen what was happening.
Terrified, I ran into the village, screaming that the dead were climbing out of their graves.
Needless to say, nobody believed me; everyone though a prank had been played on me by one of my friends.
At least, until the bodies came walking into the streets.
I don't remember much of the following minutes; people panicked and started screaming, I remember seeing a woman run up to a relative who had died only recently, not so far gone in rot as to stop looking human, and try to embrace him. I looked in horror as she was killed by the thing, killed by the dead body of a person she knew and loved in life.
As i said, I don't remember much after that exept for running; the next thing that stands out in my memory is a cave where I and a few others found ourselves. Thinking it might shelter us we went inside, finding relief, if only for a little while, from the exhaustion and terror that gripped us.
It wasn't long until we could see the first of the undead approaching our refuge, it's fellows following soon after. We cowered in our hideaway as the thing approached... and stopped, only a few meters from the entrance of the cave.
At first we thought it was just waiting for something; each and every one of the undead that approached stopped at the same spot; none would progress withing a radius of about 2 metres from the entrance of the cave.
We were soon proved wrong when one of the dead stumbled and bumped into one of it's brethren; it was propelled forward, crossing the imaginary boundary between the cave and the horde of the undead. Instantly, it was covered in a pure, white fire, burning it to ashes before our very eyes. It's fellows, apparently afraid of what had just ocurred, shied back and started retreating. Soon, none of the walking dead were left in our field of vision. We knew instinctively that they would be back however, as soon as one of us left the protection of the cave.
For now, however, it was enough; all of us were exhausted from what we had gone through, the relief we felt at being alive temporarily keeping the grief over what we had lost at bay, I soon fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
