Not to sound like an arse, but what are the Tri and Quad counts on those? With the small plant, just create a stem and place a 2tri plane, create a texture, add an alpha channel to the texture, make sure the black is COMPLETE black (dont save as a JPG, try a PNG or if you can a TIFF).
Can do the same with the tree, will save you hella resources.
